7 things to do before International Self Care Day next week

17 July 2019 –

International Self Care Day is next Wednesday 24 July 2019 and Consumer Healthcare Products Australia is encouraging Australians to incorporate Self Care into their daily life.

The theme for the 2019 International Self Care Day is: Self Care is for Life.

CHP Australia CEO, Dr Deon Schoombie, explained that “there are seven key habits of self Care which can help Australians take charge of their health and enhance their well-being.”

“We are encouraging Australians to incorporate Self Care into their daily life.”

“With seven days to go until International Self Care Day, here are seven things you can do to best be prepared and truly embody this year’s theme that Self Care is for Life.”

  1. Improve your health literacy by reading more about the medicines you may be taking or by talking to your pharmacist.
  2. Take time out to pay attention to how you are feeling. Practising mindfulness is a good way to do this so that we improve our self-awareness of our mental and physical state.
  3. Set yourself a regular physical activity goal.
  4. Review your food intake and make healthy eating a priority.
  5. Use sunscreen when outdoors, limit your alcohol intake and/or take steps to stop smoking. Risk avoidance is a very important part of Self Care.
  6. Wash your hands regularly, brush your teeth and engage in good hygiene practises to help prevent the spread of disease.
  7. Use products and services effectively and safely. Check the expiry date on all medicines in your medicine cabinet and dispose of expired medicines safely. Also, don’t forget to tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you are taking.

“All these activities you can do yourself, with family or friends,” explained Dr Schoombie.

About International Self Care Day

The International Self Care Day, 24 July, symbolises that the benefits of Self Care are experienced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In other words, the benefits of Self Care are life-long and do not just relate to a single day. It has been running since 2011.
